DSM Dyneema Material Improves Ballistic Vests

Compared to DSM Dyneema SB21, the new Dyneema SB51 material demonstrates improvements up to 20 percent for specific bullet and test specifications on ballistics vests.

DSM Dyneema SB51 is the first of DSM Dyneema's new series of unidirectional (UD) material developed for use in ballistics vests. DSM Dyneema SB51 has been developed for use in ballistic vests that combine minimum weight with protection against handgun ammunition, fragments and knives.

Dyneema SB51 is made with ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) Dyneema fiber, as are its predecessors, the Dyneema SB21 and SB31. However, the Dyneema SB51 material demonstrates improvements up 20 percent for specific bullet and test specifications.

Created specifically to address threats to military and law enforcement personnel in Central and Eastern Europe and Asia Pacific, Dyneema SB51 can provide protection against Chinese P54 pistol ammunition and the 7.62x25mm Tokarev bullet, a bottle-necked pistol cartridge that is still in extensive production in Pakistan. It can also be combined with trauma liners and stab resistance solutions to meet various international standards.

Dyneema SB51 is highly durable and resistant to moisture, UV rays and chemicals. Additionally, vests can be easily upgraded to protect against heavier rifle fire using inserts made with Dyneema.
