The Los Angeles Police Department hosted a ceremony to honor the memory of Officer Tina Kerbrat, the first female LAPD officer killed on duty, reports the Los Angeles Daily News.
The ceremony marked the 20th anniversary of Officer Kerbrat's death in Sun Valley in 1991, just four months from her Police Academy graduation and a day after celebrating her 45th birthday.
Officer Kerbrat and her partner pulled to the curb to investigate two men who appeared to be drinking beer in public.
As she about to get out of the patrol car, one man charged the vehicle and fired several shots from a .357 Magnum, killing her instantly. Her partner shot and killed the gunman, Jose Amaya, 32, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador.
