Ex-California Sheriff Surrenders for Prison Term

Michael Carona, dubbed "America's Sheriff" in 2009, was Orange County's top cop before he was indicted, tried and convicted of trying to convince a former top aide to lie for him during a spreading federal investigation of corruption in the sheriff's department.

Disgraced Orange County (Calif.) Sheriff Michael Carona showed at a federal prison in Colorado to begin a 5-1/2-year prison term for witness tampering.

Carona, dubbed "America's Sheriff" in 2009, was Orange County's top cop before he was indicted, tried and convicted of trying to convince a former top aide to lie for him during a spreading federal investigation of corruption in the sheriff's department.

Carona was free on bond pending his appeal to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Earlier this month, a three-judge panel threw out his appeal, reports the Orange County Register.
