The toll was less than had been feared, because dozens of the 122 officers who received layoff notices had found jobs at other departments. The city also cut 100 police positions left vacant by retirements and departures. The cuts brought the force from 1,271 to 1,106 officers, which is less than two decades ago, when the city had 200,000 fewer people.
