In May, John Krahn left his post working desk duty with the Elm Grove (Wisc.) Police Department, reports Elm Grove Now. Krahn has been undergoing surgeries to repair extensive damage to his legs.
During a Memorial Day parade in May of 2009, Krahn risked his life to extricate a family from a minivan stopped on railroad tracks. While attempting to open a stuck vehicle door to pull out a 2-year-old boy, the train struck the vehicle. Krahn was thrown eight feet into the air and 60 feet from the minivan.
Krahn's heroism earned him the Officer of the Month from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund for December of 2009. POLICE Magazine captured Krahn's story during National Police Week in 2010.
