Mehserle Released from L.A. County Jail

The early release today of former Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Officer Johannes Mehserle brought about two dozen sign-wavers to downtown Los Angeles to object to the officer's early release.
The protestors waved signs with the lettering of "Stop Killer Cops" but have remained nonviolent.
Mehserle's release at 12:01 a.m. was confirmed by a Los Angeles County Men's Jail automated notification system, the Mercury News reported.
Superior Court Judge Robert J. Perry ruled Friday that Mehserle, who was sentenced last November for the fatal shooting of Oscar Grant early Jan. 1, 2009, should be released because of credits for time served and good behavior.
Although Mehserle was sentenced to state prison for his conviction, he was never handed over to the California Department of Corrections because of safety concerns. Mehserle's attorney Michael Rains successfully argued to keep Mehserle in Los Angeles County jail where he was held in his own cell and apart from other inmates.
