A veteran Memphis (Tenn.) Police sergeant was critically wounded Saturday afternoon during a struggle with a man over a firearm.
Sgt. Norman Benjamin, 47, was taken to The MED in extremely critical condition, and is expected to survive the encounter. He was treated for a wound to the abdomen. Sgt. Benjamin was not wearing a ballistic vest; the department does not mandate wear for investigators.
Sgt. Benjamin was shot in his unmarked police vehicle. The 14-year veteran is assigned to the auto-theft bureau.
