VIDEO: N.J. Cop's Arrest of Mentally Ill Man
A Passaic (N.J.) Police officer who has been suspended without pay for two years is expected to rejoin the force, after he was exonerated of using excessive force on a schizophrenic man.
Officer Joseph Rios III was cleared of assault and misconduct charges, after a nine-day trial, by Superior Court Judge Donald J. Volkert Jr. in June. He has been negotiating terms of his reinstatement with the city on receiving back pay.
Officer Rios was suspended in June of 2009, following an altercation with Ronnie Holloway, a 49-year-old schizophrenic he arrested at Main Avenue and Summer Street. The officer had ordered him to zip up his sweat shirt.
The physical confrontation was captured by a restaurant's surveillance camera.
