Woman who Struck, Killed Ind. Cop Avoids Jail
An Indiana circuit court judge sentenced an Indianapolis woman who admitted to striking and killing a bicycling Greenfield officer to four years home detention. Sue Ann Vanderbeck has blamed the department for Officer William Phillips' death.
An Indiana circuit court judge sentenced an Indianapolis woman who admitted to striking and killing a bicycling Greenfield officer to four years home detention.
Sue Ann Vanderbeck, an Indianapolis nurse, in June entered a guilty plea to the felony of leaving the scene of an accident causing death, which made her eligible for an eight-year prison term.
Vanderbeck struck William Phillips, 32, with her car about 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 30 while he was on a nighttime bicycle training ride with two other officers along U.S. 40 just west of Knightstown in Henry County.
After accepting the plea agreement, Vanderbeck blamed the Greenfield PD for Phillips' death, claiming the officers were riding three abreast and violating Indiana law. The attorney representing Phillips' wife Lesley has said evidence suggests the officers were not riding three abreast.
