"The foundation has stepped forward to help the Capano and Anderson families during their time of grief," according to a foundation statement. "While time, the support of loved ones and religious conviction may all help to heal the pain, there is no immediate remedy for the financial burdens placed on the families."
Special Agent John Capano, 51, an off-duty agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, was picking up cancer medicine for his elderly father when he confronted a robbery suspect inside a Long Island pharmacy on Dec. 31. He was shot in an ensuing struggle. Capano is survived by his wife, two children, and a father who is a retired NYPD officer.
On New Year's Day, Ranger Margaret Anderson was shot in Mount Rainier National Park while establishing a road block to prevent a pursued suspect from escaping. After firing at Ranger Anderson and other responding officers, the suspect fled into the surrounding area. The Pierce County (Wash.) Sheriff's Department led a manhunt for the suspect, who was found dead. Anderson is survived by her husband Eric, also a park ranger, and two young daughters.
