A United States Park Police sergeant collapsed and died, after responding to help a critically injured man who had jumped into the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal from the Key Bridge.

Sgt. Michael Boehm died shortly after responding to the man-down call at 34th Street NW in Georgetown on Friday. Firefighters at that scene provided aid to Sgt. Boehm, who was transported to Georgetown University Hospital for treatment, according to the Park Police.

Efforts to resuscitate Sgt. Boehm failed. Sgt. Boehm, who entered service with the agency in 1992, is survived by a wife and son. The man who jumped from the bridge also died, reports the Washington Post.
