Okla. Man Gets Life for Ambushing Officer

A district judge told Hector Escalante the citizens of Oklahoma City are "lucky to have you off the streets," before giving him a life sentence for ambushing Officer Katie Lawson.

A district judge told Hector Escalante the citizens of Oklahoma City are "lucky to have you off the streets," before giving him a life sentence for ambushing Officer Katie Lawson in August of 2010.

Escalante, 19, pleaded guilty in September to ambushing Officer Lawson with an AR-15 rifle. Hector Mercado, 18, received three years for his role in the ambush, reports The Oklahoman.

The two men fired 20 rounds at Officer Lawson, who was hit six times, but returned fire, scaring them away. The officer returned to work in March.
