Okla. Man Gets Life for Ambushing Officer

A district judge told Hector Escalante the citizens of Oklahoma City are "lucky to have you off the streets," before giving him a life sentence for ambushing Officer Katie Lawson.

A district judge told Hector Escalante the citizens of Oklahoma City are "lucky to have you off the streets," before giving him a life sentence for ambushing Officer Katie Lawson in August of 2010.

Escalante, 19, pleaded guilty in September to ambushing Officer Lawson with an AR-15 rifle. Hector Mercado, 18, received three years for his role in the ambush, reports The Oklahoman .

The two men fired 20 rounds at Officer Lawson , who was hit six times, but returned fire, scaring them away. The officer returned to work in March.
