George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who claims he shot Trayvon Martin in self-defense, faces a second-degree murder charge, a special prosecutor announced today.
Zimmerman is now in custody, State Atty. Angela B. Corey said in a televised news conference.
Zimmerman, 28, claims he fatally shot Martin, 17, after the teen attacked him outside of his gated community on Feb. 26. As a result, Sanford (Fla.) Police Chief Bill Lee stepped down. Early Tuesday, a Sanford PD cruiser was shot several times.
