The attorney representing a New York City police officer on trial for allegedly raping a school teacher at gunpoint said his client did "unforgivable" and "criminal" acts but shouldn't face 10 years to life, reports the New York Times.

Officer Franklin Mata, 27, allegedly threatened to shoot the 25-year-old woman in the face if she screamed or looked at him while he raped her in an Upper Manhattan courtyard last summer.
