A North Charleston (S.C.) Police sergeant was shot with his service pistol Wednesday morning, after struggling with a man who grabbed his gun from behind.

The incident began around 5 a.m., when Sgt. Eddie Bullard got out of his patrol car next to Carpet Wholesalers at 6929 Rivers Ave. to investigate a report that someone had stolen the store's air-conditioning unit.

The suspect grabbed Sgt. Bullard's service weapon from behind. During the struggle, the officer was able to release the gun's magazine, reports ABC News . The officer's body armor stopped the round.
