Transit Cop Stabbed In Eye Shoots, Kills Assailant

Officer John Barnett, 45, underwent more than four hours of surgery at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center after the assault. After the surgery, a doctor said the knife "almost severed his eyeball in half."

An officer with the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority shot and killed his attacker, who stabbed him in the eye on Wednesday at a Jamaica, Queens, transit station.

The attack occurred shortly after 9:30 a.m. Officer Barnett was talking with a cabdriver, when Edjar Owens, 46, came toward him with a knife, saying "I'm going to kill you." Owens refused to comply with the officer's commands to drop the weapon.
