A New York State Police trooper's ballistic vest saved his life, when it absorbed a knife thrust from a suicidal 14-year-old boy.

Trooper Eric Weingartner had responded to a home in Sodus, Wayne County, on Sunday evening and contacted the boy, who was undergoing a mental-health evaluation.

As the trooper and boy were returning to the home to gather his things to take him to a hospital, the boy turned and said, "Things are about to get bad in three seconds," reports YNN Rochester .

The boy then stabbed the trooper in the upper left side, striking the vest. The officer then pushed him away and used a TASER to subdue him.
