A veteran Springfield (Mass.) Police officer was shot and killed attempting to help the girlfriend of a corrections officer who later turned a gun on himself.
Officer Kevin Ambrose, a 36-year veteran of the force, responded to 90 Lawton St. to assist Charlene Mitchell, 29. Ambrose met outside with Mitchell and Sean Bryant, a Rikers Island corrections officer, reports the Boston Globe.
Bryant shoved Mitchell into an apartment and shot Bryant through the door as the officer attempted to gain entry to the apartment.
