A Maricopa County (Ariz.) Sheriff's deputy has succumbed to injuries he sustained nine years ago, when he was dragged by a truck in a parking lot.

Deputy David Wargo, 39, will be given full honors when he's buried next week. He died Tuesday.

Deputy Wargo was working an off-duty security detail in uniform in May 2003 at a supermarket at 83rd Avenue and Camelback Road when he asked Jose Fortino Grande to move his truck. Grande, 36, tried to flee the scene while Wargo was holding on to the truck, reports the Tucson Citizen.

The former SWAT deputy fell from the truck and struck his head on the pavement. He fell into a vegetative state and communicated with finger lifts and eye blinks.
