A Virginia State Police trooper was killed late Friday, when an SUV struck the trooper in an intersection in Hanover County.
At 9:53 p.m., Trooper Andrew D. Fox was directing traffic on Route 30 at Theme Park Way when he was struck by a 1992 Jeep Cherokee. He was working a special assignment at the State Fair of Virginia, according to an agency release.
The Jeep was travelling east when it struck the trooper, who was wearing his reflective traffic-safety vest. West and eastbound traffic had blinking yellow traffic lights in the intersection and the troopers were using their issued illuminated, baton flashlights to direct traffic through the intersection.
Troopers and several bystanders ran to the SUV and lifted it off the trooper. Two troopers provided first aid and administered CPR. Trooper Fox was transported to VCU Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
No one in the Jeep Cherokee was injured in the crash. The driver was an adult female from Doswell, Va. She had a juvenile passenger in the vehicle with her at the time of the crash. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
Trooper Fox was "highly-regarded and respected by his peers and supervisors across the state as a superior trooper, mentor, field training officer and instructor," said Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent. "He served the Commonwealth as a public safety professional with genuine valor and pride."
