A Warren (Mich.) Police officer who was shot in the chest likely survived the encounter because the .380-caliber round that struck his ballistic vest didn't penetrate his abdomen.

Officer Donald Viars, an eight-year officer, was hit when he and other officers responded to a home in the 7000 block of Paige, near 9 Mile and Van Dyke early Wednesday, reports the Detroit Free Press.

Officer Viars was shot by Robert Day, 53, who may be a pimp. Day went to the home after a 21-year-old escort called him and said her client refused to pay her $100.

When officers arrived, Day ran out of the house and fired at officers. Five officers returned fire, killing Day.

Patrol car video from the incident shows Officer Viars moments after he was shot. The footage shows Officer Viars crawling in the street with his flashlight to reach his gun. He then crawls to a cruiser.
