A Baldwin County (Ala.) Sheriff's deputy was fatally shot Friday afternoon, after responding to a domestic dispute involving an emotionally disturbed man.
Deputy Scott Ward and his partner responded to a mobile home at 4 p.m. at 11830 Mallard Lane to respond to a welfare concern and encountered Michael Jansen, who shot both deputies, killing Ward. A third deputy returned fire, striking and killing Jansen. The second deputy remains in critical condition.
Jansen's mother had called 911 to report that he was agitated and wouldn't calm down. Jansen has a history of mental illness, including two court-ordered stays in a state mental hospital in 2010, reports the Press-Register.
The Baldwin County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the shooting, according to a BCSO release.
