After nearly 16 years on the run and two years after his arrest on charges he played a role in 19 murders, James "Whitey" Bulger is about to face a jury.

A judge will hold a final pretrial conference on Monday afternoon before jury selection begins Tuesday in the trial of the reputed Boston mob boss, reports the Associated Press.

Bulger was captured 17 years after he fled Boston as federal agents were closing in on him. In 1994, agents were on the verge of arresting Bulger in connection with the killings, racketeering, and other crimes. Bulger once ran Boston's violent Winter Hill gang.

He was arrested two years ago in Santa Monica, Calif., where he lived with girlfriend Catherine Greig.
