Off-Duty Philly Officer Shot in Back

According to officials, the 24-year veteran of the force was in plain clothes when a man approached him from behind, mumbled something to the officer, and then shot him once in the back.

The search continues for the gunman who opened fire on an off duty Philadelphia police officer in the city's Overbrook Park section early Sunday morning, 6 ABC reports.

Inspectors say shortly after midnight Sunday, 46-year-old Patrolman Robert Penn returned to his home on Brentwood Road after working a shift.

The most recent report says Officer Penn's condition has been upgraded from critical to fair. He could be released from the hospital this week,
