On Monday morning, a 39-year-old man who had lost his job thought his only option was just past the edge of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, reports the Staten Island Advance.

And when he rebuffed an hour-long attempt by rescuers to talk him down, a trio of NYPD Emergency Service Unit officers saw a brief opening, and pulled him back to safety.

The drama unfolded shortly after 10 a.m., on the Brooklyn-bound side of the bridge's upper level.

Det. Jeffrey Loughery and two other members of Staten Island's ESU Truck 5, Det. Paul Fazio and Officer Robert Reed, who were attached to the bridge with safety cables, managed to pull the man off the bridge's metal "finger," and though he struggled initially, once he was in custody, he calmed down.
