2 Chicago Officers Hurt in South Side Shootout
Two Chicago police officers were shot while exchanging gunfire with a man on the Far South Side at about 11:30 p.m. Friday, according to police.
Two Chicago police officers were shot while exchanging gunfire with a man on the Far South Side at about 11:30 p.m. Friday, according to police.
The shooting happened at 93rd Street and Wallace Avenue in the Brainerd neighborhood after gang enforcement officers tried to stop a car that was heading north on Wallace, police told the Chicago Tribune.
The officers had their emergency lights activated and had exited their vehicle when a man inside the car started shooting, Chicago Police Department First Deputy Superintendent Al Wysinger said outside Advocate Christ Medical Center early Saturday morning.
One officer, a 38-year-old man and 12-year department veteran, was hit in the leg and is in good condition. The other, a 31-year-old with 6 years on the job, was hit in the torso but saved by his bulletproof vest, which the bullet did not penetrate, police said. Both were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center.
