A Curry County (Ore.) Sheriff's deputy spent 45 minutes in the cold water off the Southern Oregon coast to save a teen's life, reports KPTV.

Officials say a 14-year-old was wading in the water and got sucked into a rip current and pulled 100 yards from shore.

Dep. Terry Brown was the first to respond to a bystander's 911 call. Brown put on a life vest and grabbed a rope, and swam out to the teen. But the deputy had to let go of the rope to keep the teen above water, and both of them almost drowned.

After several rescue attempts both Brown and the teen were rescued, and both are expected to fully recover.
