Polk County (Wis.) Sheriff's Dep. Mike Severson, 51, died Monday from complication of a gunshot wound he suffered in 1991.
On April 19, 1991, Severson and Dep. Allen Albee of the Burnett County Sheriff's Office attempted to arrest a man who was wanted for a Minnesota shooting. The subject's car was located near an elementary school in Burnett County. Severson responded to a call for assistance from the Burnett County SO.
Severson, Albee, and other deputies were approaching the suspect when he opened fire with a .32 caliber handgun. Albee and Severson were hit. Albee was killed and Severson, who was shot in the neck, was paralyzed. The suspect was killed in the subsequent shootout.
After the shooting, Severson served on the St. Croix Falls Planning Commission for 12 years and spoke often to school groups, WCCO reports. He also met President Clinton while raising awareness for wounded and fallen police officers.
