San Bernardino (Calif.) PD Officer Gabriel Garcia remains in critical condition and in a medically induced coma, police said Thursday, reports the Los Angeles Daily News.

Garcia was shot during an early-morning gun battle at 19th Street and Garner Avenue last Friday.

Police said the gunman was killed when his partner, a rookie police officer on the force only a few short weeks, returned fire. His partner, who police haven’t identified, is said to be doing well, even though his tenure policing the community has been very limited.

The three men accused in the attempted murder of Officer Garcia pleaded not guilty Wednesday afternoon in San Bernardino Superior Court.

If Garcia survives his wounds, the accused face a maximum sentence of life in prison.
