VIDEO: Former Shelter Dog Joins Va. Police K-9 Unit
A shelter dog graduated from the Alexandria (Va.) Police Department's K-9 School this week and will join the agency's K-9 unit, reports Fox 5 DC. Zara, a Belgian Malinois, was given to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria by her owner in September 2013 because her owner could no longer care for her. It didn't take long for the shelter to see that she was high-energy, and desperately wanted to work.
The shelter contacted the Alexandria Police Department to see if Zara might be a candidate for their K-9 unit, and she passed the department's test with flying colors. She's been in Basic K-9 school for almost a year. Now Zara will officially be a part of the department's K-9 unit.
"We could not be more grateful to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria for bringing Zara to us," said Chief Earl Cook. "She is an excellent addition to our K-9 Unit and family here at the Police Department."
