What started as a routine, after-hours police check on Sioux Falls, S.D.’s Tuthill Park late Thursday ended in gunfire and an all-night manhunt through the park's dark, hilly woods.
A 27-year-old police officer was in the park finishing paperwork in his patrol car about 10:45 p.m. Thursday when he spotted someone in his rearview mirror, according to police.
When the officer stepped out of his car, he spotted what he believed to be a gun in the man's hand, a spokesman said. The officer repeatedly asked the man, "What's in your hand?"
According to police, the man did not respond and instead stepped toward the officer, raised the gun, and aimed it at the officer.
"The officer then drew his weapon and began shooting at the suspect," police spokseman Sam Clemens told the Argus Leader.
The suspect is still reportedly at large.
