A San Leandro, Calif., police officer was run over by a car during a call Thursday morning. The 16-year-old girl suspected of driving the car was in custody by the end of the day, reports Inside Bay Area.

The Oakland girl and a 19-year-old Oakland man who was caught in the initial incident were both held on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer and auto theft. Police did not release their identities.

Officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked outside a home. When the first officer arrived, the passenger jumped out of the front seat of a white 1995 Nissan Maxima and ran. He was arrested after a brief foot chase and struggle.

Meanwhile, a second officer arrived and approached the Maxima. When the driver accelerated, the first responding officer jumped out of the way to avoid being hit, but the Maxima struck the second officer.

As the car sped away, officers fired at it as the driver fled north into Oakland. The vehicle was later found unoccupied in Oakland. It had been reported stolen on Saturday, McManus said. The driver was identified and, after phone negotiations, turned herself in.

Paramedics took the 18-year-veteran officer to a hospital, where he underwent surgery for serious injuries to his legs, McManus said. He was expected to recover.
