Two Illinois sheriff's deputies were shot in suburban Holiday Hills early Thursday during a standoff, and the shooter is still on the loose, police said.

The McHenry County Sheriff's deputies responded around 1:30 a.m. to a home in the 1300 block of West Northeast Shore Drive for a well-being check related to a domestic situation. The call came from outside the home, police said, from someone who was concerned about the people inside.

When the officers responded, the suspect opened fire through the door and they were struck, Deputy Sheriff Aimee Knop told NBC Chicago.

The suspect was identified as 52-year-old Scott B. Peters. Authorities say he is armed and dangerous.

The officers were transported to area hospitals, where one, a 12-year veteran deputy, was listed in stable condition and the other, a 7-year veteran deputy, in stable but critical condition.
