The sun set at the Houston Police Officers Memorial on Wednesday with two police officer deaths in just three days.

One was the death of Officer Richard Martin at the hands of a suspect. The other was a 16-year veteran of the department, investigators said, by his own hand. Both worked out of the Westside Command Station.

"His close co-workers we talked to out here said he appeared to have been happy-go-lucky,” HPD spokesman John Cannon told KPRC TV.  He said, “Nothing seemed out of place.  And they're very puzzled as to the whys and it may take us some time to determine it."  Cannon said the officer’s name could be released on Thursday.
