A St. Petersburg police officer is recovering after being shot Sunday evening, and the teenager accused of pulling the trigger has died.
According to police, it all started around 6 p.m. in the Coffee Pot Bayou Area. They were responding to a reported shooting with one victim transported to Bayfront Hospital, reports WTVT.
While officers were at the scene, they received a tip that the shooting suspect was 18-year-old Austin Goodner. Officials said several officers went to Goodner's home on Robin Lane for questioning.
"At about 6:45 p.m., the officers went up to the home. They were looking for the suspect here," said St. Pete Police Chief Anthony Holloway as he spoke outside the home. "The suspect was waiting for the officers, and he fired rounds at the officers. The officers returned fire. The suspect is deceased. The officer is in the hospital right now, but he's going to be OK."
Goodner was shot in the upper body, according to police. He was pronounced dead at Bayfront Hospital. Officer Michael "Mickie" Cordiviola, 40, was shot in the leg. On Monday morning, police said he had to use a hose as a tourniquet to treat himself at the scene.
