A California Highway Patrol officer was wounded early Friday in an exchange of gunfire with a driver during a traffic stop off the 10 Freeway in West Covina, officials said, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The gun battle erupted about 1:40 a.m. near Sunset and Garvey avenues, according to CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez. The attacked officer returned fire and wounded the gunman, who sped off in a silver Cadillac Escalade, Jimenez said.
The injured officer was found in his patrol car in a parking lot near the freeway. He was listed in stable condition at a hospital, officials said.
Officers from nearby law enforcement agencies swarmed the area, spotted the suspect vehicle and chased it into Fontana, where the driver crashed the Escalade in a field, Jimenez said.
