Virginia Officer Indicted on First-Degree Murder Charge in On-Duty Death
A police officer was indicted and booked Thursday on charges tied to the shooting death of an 18-year-old outside the Frederick Boulevard Wal-Mart in April.
A Portsmouth, Va., police officer was indicted and booked Thursday on charges tied to the shooting death of an 18-year-old outside the Frederick Boulevard Wal-Mart in April, reports the Virginian-Pilot.
Stephen David Rankin, 36, faces charges of first-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony in connection with the death of William Chapman II.
Rankin had previously been cleared of wrongdoing in a fatal shooting in 2011.
He has been fired, interim Police Chief Dennis Mook said in a statement.
Rankin's attorney, Nicole Belote, confirmed that no bond was set Thursday and that he is scheduled for a hearing this morning.
A trial date will be set once Rankin is arraigned, Morales said at a news conference Thursday.
