A Richmond Heights, OH, police sergeant was shot in the chest and a former Cleveland Clinic employee was killed during a welfare check incident Sunday night.
The sergeant was not named; the subject has been identified as Carlumandarlo Zaramo, 46.
The sergeant was checking on Zaramo, who was said to be suicidal, around 8 p.m.
Richmond Heights Police Chief Gene Rowe told Cleveland 19 that during that welfare check, Zaramo agreed to be transported for treatment.
Rowe said Zaramo was apparently gathering clothes when he produced a handgun and shot the sergeant in the right side of his chest.
A second officer then opened fire, killing him.
The injured sergeant, a 19-year veteran with the force, was taken to Hillcrest Hospital. He is in stable condition. He was not wearing armor at the time of the shooting.
