A Gresham, OR, crash scene evolved into a shooting that left an officer and a suspect wounded Wednesday night. Both are expected to recover from being shot, reports the Oregonian.
Around 11:00 p.m., a man driving a silver GMC Envoy crashed into a black wrought-iron fence near a apartment complex entrance.
The driver ran, police said, and a pair of officers assigned to an East Metro Gang Enforcement team were the first to respond, Gresham police said in an early morning news release. They found the suspect two blocks north, and a brief shootout ensued in the 18900 block of Northeast Couch Lane, police said.
Police have not identified the suspect.
He and a Fairview officer were hit in the exchange of gunfire. The officer has not been identified, but he was with his Gresham police partner, said Officer John Rasmussen in the news release.
The incident was not gang-related, Rasmussen said Thursday morning. The two officers happened to be the closest to the scene of the hit-and-run crash, he added.
