A North Charleston police officer shot in the abdomen during a standoff Monday was likely saved from more serious injury by his ballistic vest, according to North Charleston Deputy Chief David Cheatle. Officer Wayne Pavlischeck has now been released from the hospital.
According to the police report, the suspect was trying to run people over with his car before firing shots at police, reports WCBD.
North Charleston Police received the call around 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Officers arrived and surrounded a house where the car was parked. Soon after, police say the suspect came to a window on the second floor and began shooting at police, hitting Pavlischeck.
The suspect then reportedly came out the front door, continuing to shoot at police. He was shot by police and hospitalized, but died Monday evening, reports WCBD.
