A Volusia County Sheriff's K-9 unit dog was killed during a shootout with a fleeing suspect Tuesday night, who remained on the loose Wednesday morning, officials say.

The killing of K-9 Forrest happened about 7:15 p.m. when a shootout occurred while deputies were chasing a man thought to be a fugitive with a warrant out for his arrest, the Sheriff's Office said.

A SWAT team and helicopters searched overnight for the suspect who fled into a heavily wooded area near Vann Park in Deltona after the shooting, sheriff's officials said. As of 11 a.m., he hadn't been caught.

More than 100 deputies and law enforcement officers from around Central Florida, including deputies from the Flagler, Orange and Osceola County sheriff's offices responded to help. Deputies were blocking off neighborhood streets and residents were asked to stay inside their homes during the search, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
