Officials in New York added extra police patrols as well as officers armed with heavy tactical weapons at the region’s major airports.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Newark-Liberty International Airport, told USA Today heightened security included deployment of armored vehicles and K-9 explosives detection teams.
In Chicago, the police department said they upped security at O'Hare International Airport and Chicago Midway International Airport "to ensure the safety of the traveling public."
“Airport Police are deploying additional resources into our terminals and an increased presence in the Central Terminal Area,” LAX officials said on Twitter. “Airport Police are monitoring the situation in Florida closely. Our thoughts and prayers are with those involved.”
