A woman is under arrest for leading District police on a chase into Virginia after she allegedly stole a D.C. Housing Authority Police Department SUV while handcuffed.

According to the D.C. Housing Authority, the incident began at 5:30 p.m. at the Garfield Terrace housing complex.

A DCHA officer told WUSA9 the woman had been placed in the back of one of their cars, in handcuffs, after she tried to enter the complex. The officer said she had previously been barred from the property.

DCHA said one of its officers then left the car to retrieve something. The agency said that was when the suspect made her way to the front of the vehicle. She then allegedly found a way to get her hands in front of her and drive the car.

After that, police said the suspect drove into Virginia. DCHA said she drove through the Third Street Tunnel and I-395, and she hit at least 10 cars along the way, including a marked D.C. police cruiser that was involved in the pursuit.

Ultimately, the car crashed after the I-395/King Street ramp in Alexandria.

Police said the 26-year-old woman was arrested at the scene. DCHA said narcotics were also found on her at the scene.
