NYPD Officer's Daughter Is Born Three Years After His Death

NYPD Officer Wenjian Liu was ambushed and fatally shot in 2014. Tuesday, two-and-a-half years after Liu's murder, his widow gave birth to their daughter.

NYPD Officer Wenjian Liu and partner Rafael Ramos were sitting in their patrol car in Brooklyn on Dec. 20, 2014, when they were ambushed and fatally shot. Tuesday, two-and-a-half years after Liu's murder, his widow gave birth to their daughter.

As Liu lay mortally wounded in a Brooklyn hospital in 2014, doctors asked his wife if she wanted his semen preserved so that she might someday have his child. She said yes, and conceived their child through artificial insemination, reports the New York Post.

Liu's widow, Pei "Sanny'' Xia Chen, named the baby "Angel'' as a tribute to her slain husband — whose police hat is now next to her bed at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, said her friend and fellow law enforcement officer widow Maria Dziergowski.

The baby, whose full name is Angelina, weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces and is 19.5 inches long, Dziergowski said.
