Detroit Chief Says Off-Duty Officers Should be Allowed to Carry in Sports, Entertainment Venues
Responding to the Sunday night shooting that left more than 50 dead in Las Vegas, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said Monday large venues should all allow off-duty officers to carry firearms during events such as Detroit Lions games -- where they're prohibited.
Responding to the Sunday night shooting that left more than 50 dead in Las Vegas, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said Monday large venues should all allow off-duty officers to carry firearms during events such as Detroit Lions games -- where they're prohibited.
"We have to find ways to mitigate threats," Craig said at a media briefing from DPD headquarters. "We have to consider the off-duty officer as a force multiplier."
"In many of the reports out there, there's been a lot of conversation about off-duty officers that attended this event," he said. "I mean, what good are they if they're not armed?"
The National Football League prohibits off-duty officers attending games as spectators from carrying firearms, he said. But Major League Baseball allows them in with special wristbands that help ensure they're not drinking alcohol, the Detroit Free Press reports.
