A call to check on a sedan that seemed out of place on a Yonkers street turned into a harrowing gunbattle Monday night, with two officers pinned down — one shot through her chin and her partner begging for an armored truck to whisk her to safety.

The wounded officer and her partner were greeted with bullets as they approached the car just after 8 p.m. police told the New York Daily News.

Medics rushed the officer, Kayla Maher, 26, to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. Authorities said she is expected to recover from her wound — a shot that went through one side of her chin and out the other.

"It could have been much worse. Thank God the officer right now did not sustain a life-threatening injury," Yonkers Police Commissioner Charles Gardner said Monday night.

The wounded officer is assigned to the Yonkers Police Department’s 3rd Precinct.

Keith Olsen, president of the Yonkers Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, said Tuesday that the wounded officer is recuperating.

“She’s tough as nails and in good spirits,” Olsen said in a Facebook post, which was later deleted.
