Two Huntington Beach, CA, police officers and one suspect have been hospitalized with non-life-threatening gunshot injuries after police were called to check on a report of a man running about slashing car tires Thursday morning, reports the Orange County Register.
At least one of the police officers has been treated and released, with both suffering minor injuries. "What matters is that they're OK, and we can notify their families," Chief Robert Handy said.
The suspect was in surgery with non-life-threatening injuries, and officers were still confirming his identity, the chief said at an 11 a.m. press conference.
The chief said that the suspect had been running through the neighborhood slashing tires on cars. "One of the callers said that the suspect was yelling that he was a sharp shooter or something to that effect."
At least four officers responded and were looking for the suspect, a man, on foot. They found him in a walkway between two multi-family complexes, where the shooting occurred.
The suspect was hit by police gunfire. The chief confirmed that both officers were wounded by gunshots.
The chief confirmed that a knife was found at the scene but officers were still searching the area to see if there were any other weapons.
