Charges have been filed against a man who was shot while trying to carjack an off-duty Chicago police officer two blocks from police department headquarters on the South Side, authorities said.
Carlos Hendricks, 18, has been charged with attempted vehicular hijacking with a firearm, attempted robbery with a firearm and aggravated assault, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Police say Hendricks and another person approached the officer as he sat in his personal car around 6:30 p.m. Monday. The other person tapped on the passenger side window to distract the officer while Hendricks went to the driver’s side, pulled a gun and demanded the car, police said.
The officer fired a single shot and hit Hendricks in the abdomen, police said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition has stabilized. The other suspect ran off and remained at large Tuesday.
The officer, an 18-year veteran assigned to the 11th District, was not shot but was taken to Rush Medical Center for stress and listed in good condition.
