A Baltimore police officer, who was videotaped in a violent confrontation with a man that included multiple punches to the man's face, has resigned from the department, according to USA Today.

Baltimore Police Department Interim Commissioner Gary Tuggle reportedly said that the incident — which occurred on Saturday and quickly went "viral" on the Internet "deeply disturbed" him.

Tuggle accepted the officer's resignation. A second officer who can be seen in the video — who did not appear to throw any punches — remains on administrative duties, the department said. The department has not named the officers involved.

Interim Police Commissioner Gary Tuggle said Monday that officials are considering filing criminal assault charges against the officer, the Baltimore Sun reports.

Tuggle said second-degree assault charges are being considered against the officer — who has not been named by the department — but that he could not comment further on his department’s discussions with prosecutors because the matter remains under active criminal investigation. Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby’s office has declined to comment since the incident occurred Saturday.

An investigation remains ongoing.
