Chief Eddie Garcia of the San Jose (CA) Police Department told reporters on Monday that one of his officers was "absolutely heroic" during an incident on Friday in which an armed man opened fire on officers responding to a man-with-a-gun call.
The suspect—identified as 31-year-old Mario Caballero—allegedly emerged from the house with a red bandana covering the lower half of his face and fired a single shot at responding officers, according to CBS News.
"To stand there the way he did, to fire back at the suspect the way he did, is absolutely heroic," Garcia said.
"To have an individual that obviously is not in the right frame of mind, shooting indiscriminately, shooting at officers, is dangerous to everybody," Garcia said.
The suspect was eventually taken into custody. The gunman was transported to a nearby hospital with at least one gunshot wound, which was determined to be non-life-threatening.
